Mexico: Defensive steel lays the foundation for a dream run

Mexico have been one of the tournament’s most consistent teams, joining France and Argentina as the only nations to progress through the group stage without dropping a point. While their wins over South Africa and South Korea were hard-fought, El Tri finished the group in style with a convincing 3-0 victory against Czechia. They then ended a decades-long knockout hoodoo by defeating Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32, scoring twice early before comfortably protecting their advantage.

Javier Aguirre’s squad enters this showdown in excellent shape. Smart squad rotation during the final group match, combined with limited travel between venues, has left the players fresh, while injuries and suspensions are not an issue. Mexico’s greatest strength has been their defensive discipline.
